5 Films Every Healthcare Professional Should Watch

Studying to become a nurse or doctor can be just as fun as it is challenging, as the entire education experience becomes a way of life that is just one of the many perks that come with the career. After a few months into your education you’ll notice that your perception of the medical field will change drastically, usually in a positive way. As you begin to entrench yourself in the journey of becoming a healthcare professional, you’ll probably want to start watching shows and movies related to the medical field. With that said, here are 5 of the best medical moves of all-time:

1. Wit

Wit is the highest rated medical movie on IMDB, with a rating of 8.1 at the time of writing this. The movie is based on a one-act play authored by Margaret Edson, who has extensive experience working in hospitals. The plot revolves around a literary professor named Vivian Bearing (Emma Thompson) who is diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. After being given a terminal prognosis, she decides to undergo experimental chemo treatments. This is a particularly interesting film for students studying in the field of diagnostics and imaging online (best-xraytechnician.com).

2. The Fisher King

The Fisher King is a particularly interesting film for students studying in the psychological, neurological, and mental fields of medical science. The plot is unique and engaging, following a homeless man named Parry (Robin Williams) and a radio shock jock named Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges). After Jack accidentally provokes a caller into killing a group of random strangers, one of the victims winds up being Parry’s wife, which leads him to a mental illness that makes him obsessed with the Fisher King legend and the search for a Holy Grail.

3. The Doctor

This emotionally stirring film is about a stern and unkind doctor named Jack McKee (William Hurt) who gets to see life from the eyes of a patient after being diagnosed with a life-threatening tumor. His experience leads him to a terminally ill woman named June (Elizabeth Perkins) who opens his eyes about the importance of being kind to patients in the medical profession.

4. Patch Adams

This film is a very enjoyable medical classic that every med student should see at least once. It’s about a man who overcomes depression and mental illness and winds up earning a degree at Virginia Medical University and becoming a doctor. The most interesting part about this film is that it’s based on the true story of the real-life Dr. Patch Adams.

5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Finally, this classic Jack Nicholson film is one that every nurse should watch to get an idea of what not to do as a healthcare professional. It’s a great drama/comedy that revolves around the infamously rude Nurse Ratched. It’s also a good film to watch so that you’ll know what someone means when they say, “you don’t want to be the nurse from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Noteworthy Medical TV Shows

Aside from the movies mentioned above, there are also a number of TV series that are excellent for medical students. Some of the most popular include House, ER, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, General Hospital, Nip/Tuck, and Private Practice. All of these shows will provide a peek into what life in the medical field is like, albeit with plenty of exaggerated entertainment along the way.
